Easily identified by his black crested “faux-hawk”, and vivid blue body, the Steller’s Jay also has a loud raucous call announcing his arrival in the canopy of the trees.
The Steller’s Jay is found in coniferous and mixed-forests in the American West and also in Central America. They also inhabit parks, picnic areas, and campgrounds, and are frequent visitors to backyard feeders. They eat arthropods and seeds, hopping around on the forest floor to find their food. Put black oil sunflower seeds in your feeder and Stellar’s Jays will come in numbers. They are bold, inquisitive, and greedy. The Steller’s Jay will fearlessly clean out your berries and small fruit if available, and bully other small birds away from your feeders. They are fun to watch as they hop around, and fly in and out of the trees calling their friends to the feast.
