The Backyard Bird Directory

Filter:

Rufous Hummingbird

Hummingbirds • NW

This is North America’s “extremist” hummingbird. Not only does he reach the northernmost latitude of any of the hummingbirds; he also has the longest-known migration of any avian (measured in body lengths). This little guy is hardcore and resourceful. Rufous Hummingbirds are known to be opportunistic about feeding and will frequently visit wells in trees vacated by Red-naped Sapsuckers, in addition to the regular hummingbird diet of nectar, insects and tree sap.

This is Mike Tyson of hummingbirds. He will take on and aggressively attack other birds at feeders and flowers, and is known for having one of the most aggressive attitudes of all hummingbirds. He is easy to identify with his bright orange and green plumage. You can bet there will be a bout to watch at your backyard feeder when he is around.
