The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only species of hummingbird to breed in eastern North America and is found from central Canada to the Gulf Coast. They have the largest breeding area of any hummingbird in North America.
This East Coast guy flourishes in woodland areas of pine and mixed pine, orchards, parks and gardens. His diet is the typical hummingbird fare with one exception. When nectar is not available he will take sap from trees. You will see these busy birds as flashes of red and green as they sip and zip around your garden on the flower superhighway. Your yard will be abuzz with the beating of tiny wings if you provide flowers and feeders. Observe them while you can, because in the early fall they head for Central America on their annual migration.
