Red Crossbill

February 7, 2014 By

Crossbills • NE, NW, SW

The Red Crossbill goes where the food is, and can be found in coniferous forests from Central America to Newfoundland. The availability of conifer seeds of spruce, hemlock, fir and pine will determine where he flourishes. The Red Crossbill’s crazy Jimmy Durante beak is adapted to get to those cone seeds. He is a small red finch and this crossed beak is an easy way to identify him.
