While considered a fly-catcher, the oddly named Phainopepla primarily eats berries, especially mistletoe. In addition to these mistletoe berries, which are the main food source for late fall though early spring, the Phainopepla enjoys a variety of fruits and insects.
If you reside in the southwest, find yourself some mistletoe and you are sure to encounter at least a couple Phainopepla (and maybe a kiss if it’s the right time of year). When their berries are out of season elderberries are a favorite treat.
