This type of Bunting is a little trickier to identify than others of its kind. Until they reach maturity, males are the same drab green and yellow-green as the females. They cross-dress and blend in until their second fall. When they reach maturity, watch out! They wear the most beautiful red, green and blue plumage. There will be no doubt in your mind that is the bird we are describing.
Painted Buntings can be found in brushy and weedy areas and open areas with few trees. They eat seeds early in the year, but are particularly fond of arthropods, and feed them to their nestlings. Keep watching for these gorgeous painted birds.
