This popular and widespread species of bird is so well known and easily recognized that it is the State Bird of 7 U.S. states. The beautiful red plumage lends itself to sports teams and advertising all over eastern and central North America. They can be found in Canada, Mexico and Central America. Human encouragement and feeding has placed them in California, Hawaii and Bermuda since the early 1800’s.
Chances are, if you put out feed through the winter months, you will have a Cardinal visit you. You cannot miss them. Their distinctive Cardinal red stands out against snowy landscapes. They love seeds and grains and can be found in hedgerows and within agricultural areas. They also love berries, and will be found wherever they are made available. To attract Cardinals to your yard, put out corn and oats, and plant dogwood and mulberry.
