The mourning dove is one of north Americas most widespread birds, found year-round in all of the lower 48 states. Some of us might recall that this is the favorite bird of Sesame Streets’ Bert, who enjoyed mimicking the way that this member of the pigeon family would pick food from the ground (or “do the pigeon”).
The mourning dove feeds almost entirely from the ground and eats almost entirely seed.
