This, my little Mountain Chickadee, is very closely related to the Black-capped Chickadee. In fact, they will sometimes cross-breed or hybridize where their territories overlap in Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. They are a little more discriminating in the Rocky Mountain range, and tend to segregate by habitat. They prefer mixed-conifer forests, where there are lots of pine, spruce and juniper trees to nest in, and where they can indulge their appetite for insects and conifer seeds. They are not proud, and will come into back yard feeders anywhere from Baja California to the Yukon.
