Named after Meriwether Lewis, the Lewis woodpecker was viewed and recorded in 1805 during the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. They are often found in and around orchards and cornfields, where they will readily consume a number of fruits as well as corn.

In the winter food storage is the name of the game, and you might even see a Lewis woodpecker using power/telephone poles as such a site.
