Once appropriately named the “cactus woodpecker,” this species can be found in the South West United States where it is known to make nests and live inside the various types of cacti found in the region. It can be a humorous, while a bit odd, site seeing this bird peak its head out of its protective cactus home.
Insects, spiders, ants and other insects make up the lion’s-share of the ladder-backed woodpeckers diet, though they will occasionally snack on a variety of fruits if and when they are available.
