The Blue Grosbeak is the Marlena Dietrich of the grosbeaks. Like Marlena, the Blue Grosbeak is both beautiful to look at and to hear. Males are a distinctive blue with chestnut-colored wing bars and a silver beak. Females are brownish with two brown wing bars.
Blue Grosbeaks are found from Central America and Mexico through the southern U.S. Preferring the southern edges of forests, Blue Grosbeaks are also found in varied habitats from savannah to old fields and hedgerows. They thrive on weeds, seeds and small insects. Consider yourself very fortunate if you spot one. Blue Grosbeaks “vant to be alone.”
