American Goldfinches are scattered throughout temperate North America. They eat the seeds of many annual plants and are common visitors to gardens and feeders, especially in the winter months. They love black thistle and sunflower seeds in your backyard feeder, and also the seeds of elm, alder and birch trees. They are not too discriminating in their choice of habitat either, and can be found in weedy or grassy areas, as well as cultivated land, vineyards and orchards. They can look bizarrely patchy during the molting season, but are easy to identify when in full plumage. This iconic little finch is the State Bird of three states in the U.S.
